Acne Treatment – Panama City Beach, Florida

Are you among the 25 million Americans who prematurely breathed a sigh of relief thinking you escaped the acne plague of adolescence only to wake up one day in your 20s, 30s or even 40s with acne breakouts? Acne is the most commonly diagnosed skin disorder in the United States and worldwide. It affects approximately 90% of all adolescents and 25% of all adults. This unwelcome four letter word plagues 80% of the population at some point in their lifetime.

There are several acne treatments available, including topical and oral medications, as well as in-office chemical peel and laser/light treatments. If you are tired of your acne and want to seek treatment that can reduce or eliminate its appearance, please Schedule an acne treatment consultation at The Cosmetic Vein & Laser Center Today.

What is Acne?

Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous (or oil) glands of the skin that lead to the production of pimples. Acne most commonly affects the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and upper back, which have a high concentration of sebaceous follicles.

Blackheads and whiteheads (technically known as open and closed comedones, respectively) develop when the follicles become clogged and inflamed. When pimples become badly inflamed, they can become painful cysts. These cysts are located deep in the skin and can lead to Acne scarring.

Acne Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

There have been many myths about the cause of acne but heredity and hormones play the largest roles in the development of acne since they directly affect sebaceous glands.

Laser and light treatments are the most advanced technology for the treatment of acne. Photodynamic Therapy, IPL (Intense pulsed Light), LED Blue light, Fraxel™ Repair and Fraxel™ Restore all send energy into the dermis to target and reduce the overactive sebaceous glands. Marked reduction in acne lesions and or Acne scarring is observed after one to four treatments depending on which modality is performed. Prolonged clearance is typical, with marked reduction of acne lesions.

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Acne?

“Photodynamic therapy is today’s leading non-surgical miracle for aging skin, acne, and skin cancer. A small vial of clear, painless, liquid brilliantly erases decades of aging skin including sun damage, wrinkles, dilated capillaries, and early skin cancers. This “youth serum” is also a God-send for teens as it cures even the most stubborn cases of moderate to severe acne.”
Kimberly Moskowitz, MD

Research shows that 94% of patients have significant reduction in Acne, fine lines, deep wrinkles, sun-spots, dilated facial veins, redness, pore size, skin texture, and rosacea.

How Does Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Acne Work?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) relies on the use of a naturally occurring enzyme, 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). When applied directly to the skin, ALA (Levulan™) is selectively absorbed through the skin by Acne causing bacteria (P. Acnes) and sebaceous glands. In older patients in their 30s through 90s, ALA is also absorbed by rapidly growing cells such as non-melanoma skin cancers, pre-cancers, and sunspots. Within these cells, ALA reacts with oxygen and becomes highly excitable when exposed to specific wavelengths of light energy. In this excitable state, ALA destroys the P. Acnes bacteria and shrinks the sebaceous glands thereby dramatically reducing the severity of acne. Unhealthy cells that make up age spots, sunspots, skin cancers, pre-cancers (actinic keratoses) are also destroyed, making skin healthier and more youthful. PDT treatments improve sun damage, blotchy pigmentation, fine lines and acne scars leaving skin firmer, tighter and more youthful.

What does Photodynamic Therapy Treatment for Acne Involve?

  • Pre-treating the skin with a light microdermabrasion or a light chemical peel to help exfoliate the top layer of skin cells and allow the process to work more effectively.
  • The skin is then degreased with acetone.
  • The PDT solution, Levulan, is painlessly applied to the treatment area and allowed to incubate for 30 – 90 minutes.
  • PDT solution is then activated by special wavelengths of light for 15-18 minutes.
  • Several Light sources may be used to drive the solution deeper into the skin for best results
  • PDT Treatments are virtually painless and you leave the office feeling like you have a mild to moderate sunburn.  Over the next several days, the acne-causing sebaceous glands shrink and the bacteria are destroyed causing a significant reduction in Acne breakouts.
