What is Fraxel™ | How It Works

Fraxel™ Re:pair is a revolutionary laser treatment that promotes your skin’s own natural healing process, making you look as much as 10 years younger in 7-10 days.

Fraxel™ takes its name from the fact that it works on only a fraction of the skin’s surface at a time. Think of your skin as a digital image that is delicately touched up one spot at a time. Fraxel likewise, treats a fraction of tissue at a time using thousands of microscopic laser columns. The laser energy penetrates deep into the dermis to create tiny wounds, which trigger your body’s natural healing response. This process expedites your body’s remodeling of collagen and elastin, which results in tighter, fresher, more youthful-looking skin. This is how Fraxel treatment creates new skin from the inside out replacing damaged tissue with younger, smoother, healthier skin.

Fraxel Re:pair immediately erases years of wrinkles, fine lines sun damage, and age spots, making your skin look smooth, youthful, and rejuvenated.

How can Fraxel™ achieve dramatic results with so little downtime?

Fraxel Re:pair treatment has revolutionized the way we correct and tighten aged and damaged skin. The laser energy penetrates deep within the dermis creating a grid of microscopic dots within the skin. Each treatment “dot” is surrounded by a nest of untreated skin cells. These untreated cells move in and rapidly heal the laser-treated areas.

How Long Will my Fraxel™ Treatment Take?

Fraxel treatments take 20 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the treatment area and which Fraxel ™ laser treatment is performed. Fraxel treatments repair decades of sun damage, dramatically tighten skin and improve wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. In many patients, it can replace the need for surgical correction of the aging face.

The science of Fraxel treatment involves three key components:

  • The epidermis—the outer layer of our skin
  • The dermis—sub-layers of skin that include collagen and elastin
  • Microscopic laser columns—rebuilding skin from the inside out

Within the dermis is a network of collagen and elastin proteins that keep your skin youthful and firm. But as you age and acquire more sun exposure, those proteins break down faster than your body can rebuild them. As a result, your skin begins to sag and show damage like wrinkles, lines and age spots.

Precise columns of laser energy target a fraction of skin at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. The untreated cells rapidly move in to heal the treated columns, allowing your skin to heal quickly. This allows Fraxel treatment to deliver remarkable results with minimal downtime.

Is there more than one Fraxel™ Laser?

The Fraxel treatments vary in aggressiveness, downtime, number of procedures needed and results. The most aggressive treatment, Fraxel re:pair™ can produce dramatic improvement for severely damaged skin. This is a single treatment procedure, but requires a little more downtime and post-treatment wound care. Less aggressive treatments, like Fraxel re:store™ can produce significant results for mild to moderately damaged skin over the course of 3 to 6 treatments.

Fraxel™ Dual, the newest of the Fraxel™ lasers, combines the Fraxel™ Restore with a new 1927 wavelength. The Fraxel™ Dual 1927 wavelength has been FDA approved to treat pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratosis) on the face, chest, hands, arms and other skin areas. The Fraxel™ Dual 1927 also eliminates sun-damage, age spots, fine lines, abnormal pigmentation such as melasma. Typically, there is minimal after care and down time with Fraxel Restore™ and Fraxel™ Dual 1927.
