What exactly is “natural beauty”? She rolls out of bed with Radiant, glowing, flawless skin, pink rosy cheeks, a wholesome beautiful smile, and a baby soft complexion. “Maybe she’s born with it”…maybe not! This mythical goddess blessed by a perfect gene pool does exist but she’s certainly not the norm. More likely, t today’s so called “natural beauty” is investing a lot of time and effort to look as if she were born lucky. Genetics play a role in how you will age, but environmental factors and lifestyle choices are also key. Whether you start at 14 or 40, the choices you make in life like smoking, eating, and skincare are important determinants of how your skin and body age.
The skin you were born with was smooth, soft, flawless, and supple. If you are like most people, as the decades pass, time, sun, stress, smoke, heredity and hormones take their toll on the body’s single largest organ, the skin. As you reach your 30s and 40s you begin to notice the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and the dreaded brown “age spots”. The texture of your skin becomes coarser, your pores larger, and your complexion is uneven and blotchy. You may even notice tiny broken capillaries on your cheeks and around your nose. These are the effects of photo-aging, damage to the skin caused by years spent in the sun. Don’t be discouraged, it’s never too late to start reversing the effects of time.
These effects are caused by exposure to the harmful ultraviolet (UVA and UVB rays) of the sun. This ultraviolet radiation is absorbed by the epidermis and dermis of the skin where it generates oxygen free radicals that silently attack and mutate collagen, and cellular DNA. This assault, not only causes skin cancer, but it speeds up the aging process making people look older than their chronological age.
With this in mind, the first secret to success as a “natural beauty” is to protect your skin with a sunscreen that effectively blocks both UVA and UVB rays. If you choose the right sunscreen, one containing Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, you only need an SPF of 20 to 30.
Daily use of Alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid and Vitamin A derivatives such as Retin-A are must- have components of any anti-aging armamentarium. Both have been shown to reverse photo damage and increase collagen production reducing fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and pore size. This is a fool-proof way to restore a youthful smooth texture to the skin. For a quick fix, alpha hydroxy acid peels in concentrations of 30-70 percent are applied for two to five minutes. This “lunchtime peel” is designed to slough away the outer layer of dead skin cells, soften fine lines and age spots, improve collagen production, dry up acne breakouts and promote a rosy sun-kissed glow.
Weekly or biweekly microdermabrasion is another secret that the “Natural beauty” relies on to maintain that youthful supernatural glow. During each 30 to 60 minute treatment a gentle flow of crystals is used to exfoliate the dull outer layers of skin leaving it immediately healthier, glowing and more youthful. Designed to address fine lines, wrinkles, abnormal pigmentation and acne, most physicians recommend a series of at least six treatments for optimal longer lasting results.
For the extra sophisticated Natural beauty, Fraxelä skin resurfacing or photorejuvenation have become the new “gold standard” for creating beautiful flawless skin. In less than an hour, pulses of light erase decades of age spots, fine lines, redness, and broken vessels to revitalize sun-damaged skin.
One of the anti-aging wonders that has both revolutionized and simplified the way we halt the aging process is Botox. This purified, FDA-approved protein is injected precisely into muscles of the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet causing the overlying wrinkles and furrows to disappear for several months at a time.
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and youthful volume as collagen and hyaluronic acid levels decline. Lost volume can be restored to the skin with Restylane or Juvederm, which fill in facial creases and wrinkles such as Nasolabial folds and “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. It is also used to add volume to lips, cheeks, and facial hollows. This simple, painless, procedure takes 15-20 minutes and the results are instantaneous and natural.
Lastly, today’s natural beauties rely on innovative blends of vitamins and antioxidants like vitamins C & E that protect against sun damage by neutralizing free-radicals before they can attack the skin. Vitamin C, in the form of L-ascorbic acid, is readily absorbed by the skin and helps to speed the healing process after skin injury. Antioxidant blends like Is Clinical’s Super Serum or Active Serum or Skin Medica’s TNS Essential Serum are loaded with anti-aging, acne- fighting, and cancer preventing ingredients such as Vitamins C&E, natural fruit acids, Growth factors, and Centella Asiatica.
Let’s face it, whether the secret’s in the serum, the sunscreen, or with a laser wand, “natural beauty” is rarely maintained without at least a hint of intervention.
