What are varicose veins?

What are the Treatment options for Varicose veins and Spider veins?
Conservative treatments such as compression stockings, support the venous circulation of the legs, improve symptoms, and slow the development of new veins but will not cure or eliminate existing problems.
Corrective medical treatments such as sclerotherapy and EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) restore proper venous blood flow by eliminating varicose and spider veins from the abnormal circulation. The correct medical treatment is determined by first performing a color duplex ultrasound of the leg veins. The Ultrasound is necessary to map the size, severity, and location of the abnormal veins and to locate any abnormal blood flow (reflux) from the larger saphenous veins.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
In 2002, a non-surgical procedure known as EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment was FDA approved. Until recently, the only successful treatment option for large, painful, swollen varicose veins in the leg was surgical vein stripping. This required general anesthesia, a long painful recovery period, and the risk of unsightly scars on the legs. Now there is a revolutionary non-surgical, less costly alternative to vein stripping known as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT).

How does EVLT work?
First a comprehensive ultrasound “mapping” of the main veins in the leg is performed. The ultrasound is then used to guide placement of a thin laser fiber into the abnormal Saphenous vein in the leg. Laser energy is used to seal the vein shut at the precise origin of the problem. Blood flow is immediately re-directed to the healthy deep veins in the leg. The body then reabsorbs the treated vein. As we reduce the pressure coming from these abnormal large veins, it allows the unsightly varicose veins close to the surface to shrink away. The result is beautiful legs and improved circulation. Patients usually notice improvement in symptoms within one to three weeks. Many patients report symptomatic improvement the first night after they are treated.
