Are you tired of hiding your legs?</h2 class=”colored-header”>

You are not alone. Unattractive leg veins plague more than 80 million Americans both female and male. Fortunately, there are exciting new painless non-surgical treatments for spider veins and varicose veins, with no down-time. Now, treatments are more effective, and have fewer side effects and risks associated. We can improve cosmetic appearance, restore healthy circulation, and relieve symptoms such as pain, aching, burning, swelling, Restless Legs Syndrome, and nighttime cramps. The longer we live with varicose veins, the greater the likelihood of developing phlebitis, dermatitis, permanent skin discoloration, ulceration, and blood clots in the legs.

What are varicose veins?

Veins are the vessels that return blood to the heart. Varicose is derived from the Latin term meaning dilated. Varicose veins are abnormally dilated rope-like veins that bulge from the skin. They most often occur on the legs but can also be found on the hands, arms, breast, and genital regions.

What are Spider veins?

Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasias, or dilated capillaries (the tiniest of all veins) that are visible just below the skin’s surface. They are blue, red, or purple and often resemble a tangled spider’s web. Spider veins are primarily a cosmetic concern but can be associated with symptoms such as burning, aching, or itching.

Common symptoms of varicose veins and spider veins

In addition to being unattractive and often embarrassing, varicose veins are a progressive disease that, left untreated, causes venous hypertension and chronic venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are sometimes asymptomatic. However, varicose veins and venous insufficiency can cause symptoms and difficult to treat complications such as:

  • Leg swelling
  • Leg Pain, Leg discomfort
  • Leg aching, heaviness, fatigue
  • Leg Throbbing, burning, itching
  • Restless legs syndrome, Leg cramping
  • Inflammation of the leg veins (phlebitis)
  • Abnormal discoloration, stasis dermatitis
  • Leg ulcers
  • Deep Vein thrombosis (blood clots)
  • Pulmonary Embolism

What are the Treatment options for Varicose veins and Spider veins?

Conservative treatments such as compression stockings, support the venous circulation of the legs, improve symptoms, and slow the development of new veins but will not cure or eliminate existing problems.

Corrective medical treatments such as sclerotherapy and EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) restore proper venous blood flow by eliminating varicose and spider veins from the abnormal circulation. The correct medical treatment is determined by first performing a color duplex ultrasound of the leg veins. The Ultrasound is necessary to map the size, severity, and location of the abnormal veins and to locate any abnormal blood flow (reflux) from the larger saphenous veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

In 2002, a non-surgical procedure known as EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment was FDA approved. Until recently, the only successful treatment option for large, painful, swollen varicose veins in the leg was surgical vein stripping. This required general anesthesia, a long painful recovery period, and the risk of unsightly scars on the legs. Now there is a revolutionary non-surgical, less costly alternative to vein stripping known as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT).

If you want to banish or reduce spider veins schedule a spider vein or varicose vein consultation at the Cosmetic Vein & Laser Center with Dr. Kimberly Moskowitz the areas most experienced board-certified Phlebologist (vein specialist).

How does EVLT work?

First a comprehensive ultrasound “mapping” of the main veins in the leg is performed. The ultrasound is then used to guide placement of a thin laser fiber into the abnormal Saphenous vein in the leg. Laser energy is used to seal the vein shut at the precise origin of the problem. Blood flow is immediately re-directed to the healthy deep veins in the leg. The body then reabsorbs the treated vein. As we reduce the pressure coming from these abnormal large veins, it allows the unsightly varicose veins close to the surface to shrink away. The result is beautiful legs and improved circulation. Patients usually notice improvement in symptoms within one to three weeks. Many patients report symptomatic improvement the first night after they are treated.

What are the Advantages of EVLT?

  • 45 minute, outpatient procedure
  • No general anesthesia
  • Lower complication risk
  • 97-98% success rate
  • Short recovery time
  • Resume normal activities same day
  • Covered by most insurance plans
